Nicaragua is a real biological treasure with 78 protected areas like national parks, nature reserves, and biological reserves that cover about 17.3% of the nation's landmass. These protected areas shelter a wide range of ecosystems that includes thousands of flora and fauna species.

Some of the most important protected areas are: Bosawás Biosphere Reserve (The biggest Central America rainforest area); Miskitos Cays Biological Reserve; Miraflor Nature Reserve; Juan Venado Nature Reserve; Masaya Volcano National Park; Mombacho Volcano Reserve; Zapatera Archipelago National Park; La Flor y Río Escalante Chacocente Wildlife Refuge; Maderas Volcano; Los Gatuzos Wildlife Refuge; and Indio-Maíz Biological Reserve
