Playa Santo Domingo

A scenic volcanic sandy beach located on the east side of Ometepe Island, dotted with small charming lodges, offering tranquility within a natural setting. “Playa Santo Domingo” also has a very strategic location on the island, from where you can start exploring the interesting wild life of the area. The gray color sand of the beach is a living testimony of millenary eruptions from Concepcion volcano and its twin brother Maderas.

“Ojo de Agua” is a spring located only about 45 minutes walking distance from Playa Santo Domingo. It is a great spot for swimming in clear crystal water containing healthy minerals for the body. Excursions either to hike the active Concepcion volcano or Maderas volcano cloud forest are easily reachable from Santo Domingo. This area also offers some interesting walking to the rural communities where you can learn about the traditions and daily life of the Ometepinos.

Exploring the surroundings it is common to hear and spot the blackish figure of the loud howler monkeys as well as the playful white face monkeys. Moreover a wide variety of species of birds can be identified such as white throated magpie jay, woodpeckers, flycatchers, parrots, egrets, and others.

Other activities around Playa Santo Domingo include horseback riding to archaeological sites to observe the ancestral volcanic rocks carved with interesting figures of animals, spirals, circles, and other figures with ritual representations. Biking to nearby communities, farms, archaeological sites, beaches, and natural reserves are among the choices.
