The municipality has a population of 45 thousand people, whose main economic activities are the production of rice, beans, coffee, corn, cattle and cocoa beans. The town is located at 420 meters above sea level.

The people of Waslala are known to be very hospitable and friendly, most of the time offering the foreigners their houses and hot meals, such as boiled beans, a local soft cheese, tortillas and a hot steaming cup of coffee.

The most important event of the town is the celebration for San Jorge. Thousands of people take part in the processions and city hall organizes horse parades, bull ridings and other cultural activities.
