Selva Negra

A breath-takingly beautiful ecological mountain hotel nestled in the highlands of Matagalpa. This magical place offers visitors plenty of opportunities for interesting activities like horseback riding, hiking, bird watching, wildlife observation, cultural and educational understanding.

Its adventurous trails and lush tropical forest provide memorable experiences to nature lovers, who have the chance to observe some of the 200 species of birds found here, including interesting resident and migratory birds such as: Three-wattled Bellbird, Keel-billed Toucan, Emerald Toucanet, Violceous Trogon, Violet Sabrewing, Rufous-tailed Hummingbird, Baltimore oriole, etc… The wild life also includes white faced monkeys, howler monkeys, Central-American agoutis, white-nosed coatis, peccaries, opossums, and more.

You can also have the chance to learn about the unique process of producing “Selva Negra” coffee, one of the best organic coffees of the northern region of Nicaragua. The hand-picking season lasts four months, usually from November to February; approximately 700 coffee pickers have to perform this important task. The organic procedures and the environmental friendly vision of Selva Negra are what make this Arabica coffee unique. Three hundred workers are employed all year round who receive benefits such as housing, schooling and medical care.

One remarkable characteristic of Selva Negra is its succulent food, which is mostly organically produced in the farm such as vegetables, cheese, milk, eggs, coffee, meat, ham, and more. Selva Negra has also set an example for other farms that want to improve their production.
