This destination includes the two largest departments of the North of the country, Matagalpa and Jinotega, as well as the two main cities of the same name. These regions are the most important coffee regions in Nicaragua, where more than half of this crop is cultivated.
The cultivation of coffee has been a tradition around this area since the end of the XIX century when mostly German immigrants, encouraged by the Nicaraguan government at that time, were motivated to grow coffee. Its high mountains allow the growth of high quality coffee in perfect weather conditions. Currently, Selva Negra, La Cumplida, Esperanza Verde, El Jaguar, Aguas del Arenal and other coffee farms are offering lodging and guided visits to teach about the interesting process of coffee production, such as handpicking, drying, sorting, roasting and packing.
These farms are now involved in promoting responsible tourism, sustainable and environmentally friendly practices. The landscapes are amazing with the many mountains and rural life is very approaching, most likely one of the best.
