Maribios Volcanic Chain

This fascinating active volcanic chain lines the Pacific basin, stretching 70 kilometers from the northwest to the southeast. Each volcano has unique features and characteristics that make them special.

The Cosiguina volcano located in the most northwest tip of the country, had the largest eruption ever in 1835 forming a beautiful volcanic crater lake; the imposing San Cristobal has the highest altitude of all, 1745 meters above sea level; the active Telica volcano is crowned by a brownish crater; Cerro Negro a small cinder-cone and the youngest one in Central America is only 20 kilometers from the colonial city of Leon; and Momotombo has played an important role in the history of the country. Throughout ancient times large amounts of ash and sand have been deposited continuously enriching the surrounding soil for extensive farming and cattle.
