Bosawas

The Bosawas Biosphere Reserve is located in the north of the country next to the border with Honduras. It was declared the first Biosphere Reserve in Nicaragua comprising 14% of the country’s land with a huge extension of 20,000 square kilometers.

It is the largest and untouched tropical forest in Central America with vast virgin jungles and high biodiversity. Its name comes from three significant geological formations: the BOcay river, the SAslaya cloud forest mountain and the WASpuk river.

Bosawas has more than 270 species of plants with ornamental, medical and food attributes. Recent studies records a rich wildlife composed of 200 species of vertebrates and invertebrates. The difficult access to this remote and the scarcely inhabited region make its fauna rich in endangered species, including resplendent quetzals, scarlet macaws, harpy eagles, toucans, jaguars, pumas, tapirs, peccaries and others.

Some of the Mayangna and Miskitos ethnic groups live on the river banks of the important waterways that cross through this magnificent Meso-American biological corridor.
