Backroads of Nicaragua

9 Days / 8 Nights

Day 1: Arrival Managua

At Managua International airport you will be met by your driver to transfer to your City hotel.

Day 2: San Carlos - Solentiname

Mid-morning the hotel shuttle will take you to the domestic flight terminal near to the hotel. You will take the 1 hour flight from Managua to the town on San Carlos that lies on the shores of Lake Nicaragua and the Rio San Juan. There you will be met and taken to the pier to take your private boat to the archipelago of Solentiname. The islands lie at the eastern end of Lake Nicaragua and have a rich ancient and modern history...

Day 3: Solentiname

Today will be spent exploring the islands. You will visit the handicraft workshops and learn about the role of the artists’ patron Ernesto Cardenal. Although isolated geographically the islands have played an important part in the political history of Nicaragua and are on the migration route for thousands of birds every year...

Day 4: Los Guatuzos – San Carlos – San Pedro de Lovago

Early in the morning you will leave the islands to visit the RAMSAR site of Los Guatuzos. This wetland area is home to a wide range of aquatic birds, including the beautiful Roseate Spoonbill and several Kingfisher species. There is a research center on-site, and there are trails and even hanging bridges for great observation of the flora and fauna. You will then take the boat back to San Carlos where you will be met by your driver and guide to travel to the Nicaraguan “cattle country” of Chontales...

Day 5:  Bike Ride La Kilona

Today is time to get out and about in an area of Nicaragua where foreign tourism is virtually unknown. You will have a bike ride along dirt tracks with wonderful views of the Amerrisque Mountains to the waterfalls at La Kilona, where you can swim. You will take a picnic lunch to give you more freedom to enjoy the day out in the countryside...

Day 6: Chontales Cuisine - Somoto

This morning you will take the back roads through the Amerrisque Mountains to Finca El Encanto – a working farm in the small community of El Milagro. Here you will get the chance to make tortillas and cheese and meet the local people of this rural community. You will then rejoin the main highway to head to the north of the country and the small town of Somoto...

Day 7: Cañon de Somoto

The Somoto Canyon was formed nearly 12 million years ago due to tectonic plates shifting.  An earthquake literally split several hills in two and started the formation of the canyon as the rivers Tepacali and Name began to slowly erode the walls of the canyon, making it deeper and deeper throughout the years.  For years only the local residents of the surrounding communities knew about the existence of the canyon who always called the canyon Namancambre or La Estrechura..

Day 8: Montibelli

An early start is worthwhile to drive to Montibelli Private Wildlife Reserve, one of the principal birding sites at the Pacific, located only 30 minutes from Managua. Due to its varying altitude levels the area – measuring over 160 hectares – includes both tropical dry forest and semi-deciduous tropical forest. A total of 152 bird species have been identified, including parrots, woodpeckers, hummingbirds, trogons, and also Nicaragua's national bird, the Turquoise-browed Motmot...

Day 9: Managua & Departure

In the morning your driver will return to take you back to Managua.
