This is a fantastic trip to one of the most pristine cloud forests in Nicaragua. Departing from the base of the outstanding steep “Mombacho” volcano we head up to the top of this amazing mountain driving through several coffee farms and transitional ecosystems. Our unique challenging adventure starts from the biological center where we receive significant information about the natural marvels of the “Mombacho reserve”. After obtaining, as well, vital instruction of this exciting 4 hour walk and hike, we get immersed into the interesting “puma trail” where luxuriant vegetation and wild life can be observed. Several species of interesting bromeliads plants, orchids, vines, lianas, flowers, trees full of lichens, ferns, butterflies, insects, monkeys and birds are part of the rich biodiversity of Mombacho.
According to more recent studies conducted by biologists from “Cocibolca Foundation”, “Mombacho Natural Reserve” is home of 47 species of mammals, 10 species of amphibians, 36 species of reptiles, 173 species of birds and thousand species of insects. Unique endemic species such as Salamanders (Bolitoglossa mombachoensis) and orchids (Maxillaria mombachoensis) are special biological features in Mombacho. During your fascinating journey you can experience five different special ecosystems, dry tropical deciduous forest, pre-mountain semi-deciduous tropical forest, tropical cloud forest, dwarf forest and shaded coffee forests.
If weather permits spectacular views over Lake Nicaragua, Isletas and Zapatera Island can be enjoyed. At this altitude, approximately 1,250 meters above sea level, we can find what biologists called dwarf forest, a very special type of ecosystem where trees remain short due to the influence of strong winds at this height. While hiking up and down you can also be surprised by loud calls of howler monkeys. After this unforgettable experience we go back to our final destination.

Julio and my driver Yamal were Super Terrific!!!!! I met their wives one night and we went out for dinner. Then, we went out dancing. They kept me entertained and laughing.
The best way to experience the Nicaraguan culture. One of the wives gave me embroidery napkins and a CD of a singer named Paquita La del Barrio. Funny, very funny. Every time I play the CD, it gives me back memories of my Nicaraguan trip.
Once more I had a FANTASTIC time.
