Untouched rainforests, biological natural reserves, unique wetlands, rich biodiversity, lush vegetation, fascinating wild life, secluded rural communities, eco-lodges, relevant history and amazing waterways are indeed good reasons to start packing and join us to this amazing Nicaraguan destination.
The region of “Rio San Juan” is wonderfully constituted with many interesting natural sites where nature enthusiasts can expect to see lots of tropical wonders. Amazing large tropical trees, colorful poisonous dart frogs, howler monkeys, bromeliad plants, reptiles, several species of beautiful butterflies are part of the rich biodiversity within the biological reserve “Indio Maiz, second largest Nicaraguan rainforest, situated in the south east of the country.
With incredible natural surroundings and amazingly abundant birdlife, “Los Guatuzos” wetland natural reserve and “Papaturro” river” are both fascinating nature refugees, where several species of birds, reptiles, mammals, amphibians and plants can be observed. Especially caimans along the river bank can be spotted as well as green iguanas, white faced monkeys and certainly many species of water birds. Also Rio San Juan’s department has seen the development of eco-lodges like “Sabalos” and "Bartola Lodge", places dedicated to preserve and involve the communities in friendly practices toward the environment. Beside “eco-tourism” this region offers world-class fresh water fishing, especially for the tarpon sport fishermen. Another amazing natural site and full of culture is the archipelago of “Solentiname”, formed with 36 volcanic beautiful islands, a place where time seems to have been stopped by its authentic flavor and communities are devoted to art, painting and sculpting. “Solentiname” is nestled in the southeast of Lake Nicaragua with spectacular sunsets.
Historical towns such as El Castillo and San Carlos are also important destinations where nature and history blend perfectly well in harmony. Both villages were used as strategic spots for building fortresses on their highest hills. Today El Castillo still features the famous fort of “La Inmaculada Concepcion” where historic battles between Spanish and English, French, and Dutch pirates were performed. Probably “Rio San Juan” is the most famous river in the country because of its potential in the past as a possible water canal during the XIX century. It was also used as a water way by the European and American gold seekers between 1849 and 1869.
So lots of natural surprises, incredible nature wonders and a fascinating history are waiting for you. ORO Travel certainly wants you to experience this amazing trip to this unique part of the world.

We enjoyed everything we did and loved every place we stayed (Morgan's Rock, Casona de los Estrada, and especially the wonderful Albergue Celentiname -- our favorite place on the trip -- and Dona Maria's cooking!).
We only wish we could have stayed in Nicaragua longer. We're already trying to plan another trip there, and the next time we travel with you, we'll certainly ask for Francisco to be our guide again. He did an excellent job. He was clearly very well informed about his country and was able to communicate lots of information in a clear and interesting way, he was always on time and very well organized, he immediately made us feel comfortable, and he made everything easy, including getting through the border crossing at San Carlos, which I'm sure we could never have managed without him.
Along with all this, he offered something really special: he has such a warm and friendly personality that we felt we were traveling with a Nicaraguan friend, and everywhere we went he managed to create this warm and friendly atmosphere for us with everyone we met. He was also willing to adapt to our needs, taking us on a great tour of Duilio Jimenez's pottery workshop, helping us negotiate for paintings in Solintename, etc., and he also did lots of special things that made our trip really memorable. For example, at the Albergue Celentiname, my daughter (age 14) and Dona Maria's granddaughter, age 13, were very shy with each other until Chico played a noisy, fun card game with them that got them laughing and talking in English and Spanish, and now my daughter feels she has a Nicaraguan friend her age.
These are the kinds of priceless experiences that we'll remember all our lives, and this happened because of Chico. I'll recommend your company and Chico to anyone traveling to Nicaragua.

I have just finished my explore tour of Nicaragua and want to let you know what a great and interesting time I had. The tour was great from start to finish and Julio was great at answering my many questions about your country.
I gained a lot of knowledge of Nicaragua, of its people, history and the future of the country. I also had the pleasure of meeting Carla whom I think is just a great person. As this was my first tour ever it gave me a lot of insight to the job of tour operator, and it is certainly not a easy one with managing eighteen personalities. Julio did a great job!
Thank you to all of you for making my trip so enjoyable, and I will
certainly will be coming back.

The paving of this road will indeed bring a lot of benefits to local transportation service. Mr. Luis Gonzalez, major of the Almendro municipality, stated that this type of development project had been expected for many years by the local inhabitants and they feel so happy and proud that they will have a new paved road that will eventually improve the social and economic situation of this region. This significant work is financed by the Inter-American Bank of Development. The total pavement will cover a distance of 125 kilometers (78 miles) and it has been divided into four phases.
