Masaya is a very interesting region with lots of living traditions, captivating history and a thriving culture. This fascinating destination blends perfectly well with the charming regions of Granada and Managua. Before the Spanish conquest (1524) the whole area of Masaya, whose “nahuatl” word stands for “place for deer”, was densely inhabited by “Chorotegas” indigenous groups whose culture was intimately related with “Meso-America”.
Today the proud inhabitants from the Masaya region enjoy a wide array of inherited customs as well as keeping alive several vibrant catholic festivities. Undoubtedly the Masaya region is very rural, producing some of the best fruit of the country; from its many little farms sweet bananas, juicy oranges, buttery avocadoes, refreshing watermelons, delicious mangoes and other numerous tropical fruits are cultivated. Also the region of Masaya is known for its colorful and high quality handmade crafts such as cotton hammocks, precious woodcarvings, varied stylish ceramics, leather produce, fine furniture, and many more mastermind products.
Moreover meaningful geological formations are part of this unique region, especially Masaya National Park which is one of the most striking and wonderful sites of this area. The constant steaming activity of the Santiago crater as well as its filled-petrified lava caldera is undoubtedly exceptional features to admire. Other unique geographical characteristics of this pleasant region are its breathtaking craters, lakes Apoyo, the largest water-filled caldera in Nicaragua, and lake Masaya, a former water reservoir for indigenous groups. Masaya will definitely delight you with unexpected and unforgettable experiences where its welcoming people and natural wonders are awaiting for you!

You read my mind! I was going to e-mail you also. Everything went wonderfully in Nicaragua! Oro Travel is highly recommended by me; they were on time (early a couple of times) and didn't hesitate to make stops along the way we requested (ie: Pali grocery store and photo ops). I knew the properties I chose were going to be good but once we got to them, they were more than a website or brochure can prepare a person for. Excellent service had by all.
Our guide Julio Flores with Oro was the best! Very knowledgable and the clients traveling with me commented on his English. Very good! The city guide at the Masaya market behaved more like a vendor and irritated me with his aggresiveness for us to make purchases. Not good.
Overall, my experience was wonderful and I will do business with you again. What does your office in Ft. Lauderdale do? I should make a visit there since I live 30 minutes away.
I want to say how wonderfully...:

He went out of his way to be accomodating and available. He checked on everything for us. He was extremely pleasant and knowledgeable. We thank him and we want to say what a valuable guide you have.

We would like to say a big “thank you” to ORO Travel for making our time in Nicaragua such a memorable experience. We enjoyed every minute of our time in your wonderful country.
Everything you did was of the very best. Our room at The Alhambra overlooking the main square in Granada was perfect. The tours were even better than we had thought, with all aspects of local life and culture included. A life’s ambition to have a close encounter with a live volcano was more than achieved, standing on the rim at Masaya.
What made it all so special was Rodolfo, our guide, and Juan Ramon, our driver. What a really great team, they were the very best, we could not have wished for better. Jamel was good too, I’m not sure we would have wanted to cope with the border crossing without his expert help!
The venues you chose for our lunches were just perfect and the food extremely good too. The quality and services you provided were superb and we cannot praise you enough. It has whetted our appetite - we want more time in Nicaragua - definitely with ORO Travel. We shall have to save up, but I’m sure we will be in touch, hopefully before too long.
Please convey our best wishes and thanks to Rodolfo and Juan Ramon.

Granada and ORO Travel - short trip report:

Just back from 4 nights in Granada. Travelled independently but arranged everything through Oro Travel, with Steen being my connection.
Simply perfect and 100% proffessional. I recommend this agency very much ! He arrnaged for us house rental, car rental and transfers from the Managua airport on the night of arrival and then to Costa Rica on our last day were perfect and on time.
In Granada we stayed in a rental house called Casa Gallo - beautiful house with 3 bedrooms built around an elegant and large yard. Rooms have A/C which is vital in the heat and the house has all amenities, including a nice pool. Felt free and safe to drive around and to walk around at night. Rented a car fron Budget (15 minutes walking from the house) and the supermarket is also 10 minutes walk. Great restaurants for both breakfast and dinner. Drove to Masaya crater and Mombacho, which were both fun, unique and interesting.
Had no toubles with police... The town of Granada itself has a lot of charm. Very Recommended for people seeking unusual destinations.

The Fortress with lots of history...:
Destination: Masaya
Date: June 13 2008
The cold and dark cells of this place hold a lot of stories, episodes that marked the political life of Nicaragua. This remarkable site is still standing as a witness of the past, but now the fortress is preserved by the boy scouts and visited by tourists who come to learn about the events that converted it into an icon in our country. Walking through the paths of this place is like going back in time to real Nationalism and revolutionary spirit. Imagining about the life conditions of the inmates in this type of place, it makes us think about insurrections and battles on which many Nicaraguan and foreigners left behind their legacy written with blood in the history of our homeland.

Masaya’s Traditions “Aguizotes and Torovenado”:
Destination: Masaya • Source: ORO Travel
Date: October 13 2011
Masaya, a small town settled in the pacific region of Nicaragua and just half an hour from Granada, is celebrating this month its patron saint “San Jeronimo”. This colorful festivity is regarded as the largest celebration in the country, from September to November. A remarkable feature of this important event is the performance of “Los Aguizotes”, where thousands of people wear costumes and mask featuring spirits of the dead and characters from indigenous horror stories, mainly originated during the Spanish conquest including the “Oxen Chariot of Death”, “the Headless Priest”, “La Mocuana”, “La Cegua”, etc..
