The Department of Managua is a dynamic region offering a wide variety of interesting opportunities for each adventurer’s likes. It is situated in the flat lands of the Pacific basin of Nicaragua, surrounded by other important departments including Granada, Masaya, Carazo, Leon, Matagalpa and Boaco. It has a total population of approximately 2 million people, most of them living in the city capital of Managua. Due to its rich volcanic soil, the department of Managua produces an ample array of agricultural crops such as corn, beans, coffee, rice, sugar cane, sorghum, bananas, plantains, pineapples, papayas, dragon fruits, etc.

Some of the most remarkable geographical features of Managua are its long wide beaches in the Pacific Ocean, Los Cardones, Masachapa, Pochomil and Montelimar, which are very popular on weekends and especially during Easter. In addition the department of Managua holds the second largest fresh water lake of the country, Lake Xolotlan. Also the region of Managua is crossed by a hill chain, “Las Sierritas”, which rises at the highest elevation of 950 meters above sea level where high quality coffee is traditionally grown. It is also worth to mention the proximity of Managua to the active volcanoes of Momotombo and Masaya as well as other interesting destinations. Two of the most important natural reserves of the Pacific Basin, “Chocoyeros” and “Montibelli”, are nestled in the outskirts of the capital holding significant wild life and flora.

Even though capitals usually are not that attractive “Managua” is a bit different offering the visitors archaeological sites, a unique modern catholic cathedral, Sandinistas-revolution monuments, museums, art galleries, handicraft markets, volcanic lakes, shopping malls, popular markets, discos, casinos, nightlife and international restaurants.
